Portfolio building!!

To progress in our photography skills and to create a solid portfolio for people to see, we have 4 engagement shots with our friends:
1.) 2 Engagement shots for a couple depicting the different stages of their relationship (NorCal – maybe at Berkeley & SoCal- at UCLA, the place where it began!)
2.) 1 Engagement shot for a couple who, the girl, is also working to be a professional photographer – a fellow Nikon carrier
3.) 1 Engagement shot for a couple who, the guy, is a photographer.

pending and a couple who was willing to model for us for a day! Hopefully we’ll have more opportunities. We are looking for:
1.)
family group shot
or perhaps even a
2.) baby or child shot

So if anyone is interested! Please do :) talk to us about it, email us at amy@ax2d.com

Lastly, we’ve been thinking of ways to make us stick out. What would make our portfoilo more special. Most pro photographers seems to have Engagement and Weddings in their list of services. Some have Children & Family. Some even have Boudoir shots as part of their web portfolio. Maybe some even have sports or something that may make them stand out more.

So in the interest of having a somewhat unique hobbie that not everyone is willing to pursue, we had decided upon possibility of putting Race Tracking as one of the list of services. Unfortunately, we have a major competitor that we’ve seen at almost all the track events that Andrew has attended – GotBlueMilk. Here’s an example shot he did of Andrew’s car Mindy:

At Thunderhill - from GotBlueMilk.comgotbluemilkmindy

At Thunderhill - from GotBlueMilk.com

As I think about it, what makes his pictures differ from mine? He definitely has a great many legs ahead.
1) He has access to all the major spots on the track through the sponsors of the event (not to mention a electric scooter that takes him around the track).

2) He has a really HUMONGOUS $5,000 – $10,000 lense… seemingly bigger than him… that sits on a monopod to get a really zoomed in, and slightly panned shot.

3.) He’s already and established motorcross photographer, not only for cars but for others as well (ex. pro-Drag, and maybe pro-motorcycles).

4.) He’s willing to stand outside in the 70-100 degree weather, turning almost black, to get his shots – which I hesitate to do because i don’t like the heat and i hate having odd tan spots like a sunglass tan and such.

So in reality, i have no idea how to get into this little niche of the motorcross. From the photographs that I’ve already taken for Andrew, I would say its possible. Maybe shadow a person who would pay for us to take pictures of him for the whole day of the event – there are definitely many Porches, Ferraris and even expensive special made Lotus track cars (like the 2-Eleven)

that might be willing to pay for someone to shadow them for a whole day at the track. Also, I’d only be willing to go to the ones that Andrew tracks and that might become more limited as I may find a full time job and can’t attend with him on the weird Friday events. Secondly, as we both are planning to have kids eventually, which may take him away from this sport until maybe later in his life.. or maybe never, who knows.

So in many ways, we are still deciding what to do as that UNIQUE service that would make us be someone who would stand out around all the other people. Of course, we are working for our photos to be SPECTACULAR but that alone may not be enough.

So what should we do? Definitely still thinking! If anyone has suggestions, we’d be happy to hear :)

So yeah, that’s about it for today!

7.5.09

The day went by so fast, especially because I was up and about the whole day. The weather was so awesome that it made it easy for me to stand out in the sun and not be afraid of heat stroke or over exposure. Thank God for that because I got some great shots and had a lot of fun playing and getting to know the camera! So hope that you’ll enjoy! Feel free to comment!

Race track days

Andrew’s Track days

Laguna Seca, Monterey & Thunderhill, Willows

Imagine being in a 90-100 degree race track for a good 10 hours. The sun is strong, the ground is hot. Every car that comes into the paddock may have just exhausted a quarter tank of gas/track run (about 30-45 min/session). Engines are hot, breaks are scorching…. every person checks their car to see if every part is holding through the fast turns, the hot temperatures and the quick stops. That is the life behind the fast-track. Thank God that not all tracks are that hot, like Laguna Seca – which was a beautiful cool day -  but there are times I had wished that I had a gallon of cold water to dump on me.

Although it’s not racing but merely running the track as fast as one can (passing only when needed or when signaled to, depending on the group you enter in) it is still quite exciting and breathtaking… going at speeds of 40-120, driving in a blur into and out of turns. That’s what my husband craves for… feeling “the need for speed” as Goose and Maverick would say in Top Gun.

So, as any good wife I tag along. It’s funny, I’ve even seen parents bring their baby and both of the people take turns on the track. Eventually that seems to be the dream Andrew has. For now though, I’m just content on being a photographer. These are the photos I’ve managed to muster up in the heat and the cold cool days. Still perfecting the shots… especially as we’re going to Infineon this weekend. Need just that one shot that will say it all!

Thunderhill – Willows, CA – 6.19.09

This track was little harder to deal with, especially as 1) its usually 90-100 degrees there and 2) the track was so far away. These pictures were mainly taken by our 70-300 telephoto lens (a few were not).
